10 Life Lessons from a Navy Seal

It was a great commencement speech on what the speaker, Admiral William H. McRaven, learned from his training. And it’s even more interesting coming from a Navy Seal, who I’d assume are one of the top exhibitors of willpower and grit over insurmountable odds.

For habit formation, I like the first one on the list:

It was a simple task—mundane at best. But every morning we were required to make our bed to perfection. It seemed a little ridiculous at the time, particularly in light of the fact that were aspiring to be real warriors, tough battle hardened SEALs—but the wisdom of this simple act has been proven to me many times over…Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right, you will never do the big things right.

There are many other gems in here. Don’t give up. Life will throw you soul-testing challenges and failure, but that’s life, keep going. It is inspiring, and it is especially inspiring these days, when I feel my grit and will and endurance challenged, and depression welling up.

A circus was two hours of additional calisthenics—designed to wear you down, to break your spirit, to force you to quit…

Life is filled with circuses.

You will fail. You will likely fail often. It will be painful. It will be discouraging. At times it will test you to your very core. #5. But if you want to change the world, don’t be afraid of the circuses.

There are more, but I’ll let you read them.
